The seminar explores the actual and potential practical implications for EU labour law of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights especially in the context of the current economic crisis. The seminar will first outline the background to EU action, presenting the environment in which the EU acts. The focus will then move to the challenges and factors that affect EU performance in relation to social rights. Also, the core concept of social rights will be introduced, and examined in relation to other values making up the EU’s constitutional identity. The seminar will also explore the foundational ideas, the models of implementation, and the grammar of political discourse around social rights in comparative legal systems in Europe. Learning around these issues will be prompted by case studies of specific rights.
